Chapter 9

ON MY way home from Parkway High I had time to stop into Kohl’s and pick up a couple of shirts, underwear, and a pack of dress socks. Kohl’s always had a sale on, and I left with change from a hundred bucks.

Chasing away my exhaustion with three cups of coffee, I stayed up into the small hours, first putting on laundry and packing for New York, then honing my résumé and uploading it to the Oakland Schools Consortium website. There were no suitable vacancies as yet, but as Lucy Ramírez had pointed out, something could come up anytime.

After that, with eyelids that felt as if they were thickly lined with sand, I went through my mail, both the paper and the electronic kind, staring sleepily at the statements and bills, as if by the sheer force of my will I could bring the numbers down. I was too caffeinated and tightly wound to sleep and I didn’t know what else to do.

In the end, I packed away my paperwork, and worked off my last, lingering ounce of energy by mopping my floors.

The next morning, my hand on the front door latch, about to head out in the cold and dark to go to school, my phone rang. It was Nick.

‘Hey, honey,’ I said, leaning my head and shoulder against the doorjamb. ‘Good morning.’

‘Good morning, lover.’ His voice was clear and strong, like he’d had a good night’s sleep and had awoken with the larks, fully refreshed. ‘My flight’s on schedule and I should be back in the D at half past nine. Are you excited?’

‘You bet.’ I stifled a yawn. ‘One more working day, and the weekend will be ours.’

‘Great. I’ll need to make a pit stop into the office after I’ve landed, but I expect to be home around lunchtime.’

‘See you later.’

My mood lifted with the sound of his voice. I drove to school with the radio turned up loud and sang along to Taylor Swift. A gruelling week was almost behind me and I’d earnt my weekend.
